Getting a good sound from a violin is not solely dependent on the violin strings. The sound is also produced by the bow and a bow that is not well looked after will not give the performance that you expect. A lot of beginners believe the more they clean their bows the better. However, you can over clean your bow. You must not clean your bow every time you use it. All that is needed is for you to give your bow a good wipe with a soft cotton cloth. The cloth must be similar to a summer sheet or hankie because that type of cotton does not give off any fluff or residue.
It is important to only wipe your bow with a thin cotton cloth when the bow is tightened. The cloth or your fingers must not make contact with the hairs of the bow. What you want is to wipe between the bow hair and the shaft of wood. There is a good reason for not touching the bow hairs. Touching the bow hairs may result in an increase in oil. A bow that is oily is not going to give good bowing. Violin sounds need to be clear.
