If you have decided to learn to play the violin or if your child wants to take up the violin, you will need to find a good violin class. If you are looking for your child, a good place to start might be his/her school. Many schools offer violin classes as a part of their curriculum. Sometimes they start offering this in the elementary schools. You can check to see what is available in your child’s school. If the school teaches violin, this is a great place to start, because your child will likely have opportunities to perform in school functions.
However, if the school does not teach violin or if you are looking for classes for yourself, you may want to go to a violin store, perhaps the one you purchased your violin from, and ask them who they would recommend for a good violin class. They may know of several people that you can choose from. You may be able to find group classes or individual classes, whichever you prefer. You can also look through your local newspaper for ads offering violin lessons. If you live in a major metropolitan area, you should find several people who teach violin.
Keep in mind, that private lessons will be fairly expensive, so make sure your child has a true interest. You might want to get a beginning violin DVD course and work with your child to see if they really have a true interest in a long term involvment with the violin. If you are interested in learning the violin yourself, purchasing a DVD program would also be a good way for you to start, just to see if this is an avenue you want to pursue.
If you live in an area that has a symphony orchestra, call the concert hall and ask for a referral to someone who may teach violin lessons as a side line job. You can even put an ad in a local paper stating that you are looking for a violin teacher. There are many places you can look to find a good violin class, it just may take a bit of research. You should find out if the person you will use has references before you start. You obviously want to get a good instructor in the beginning if possible.
